Last night in Vancouver the Western Magazine Awards Foundation presented its annual awards program, with Up Here winning the highest honour of Western Canada Magazine of the Year. The Yellowknife-based publication dedicated to life in Canada’s far north is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year; previously it was named Magazine of the Year by the National Magazine Awards Foundation in 2009 and continues to be one of the most impressive and entertaining periodicals in Canada.

Saskatchewan Magazine of the Year: Saskatoon Home
Alberta / NWT Magazine of the Year: Up Here
BC / Yukon Magazine of the Year: Western Living
Best New Magazine: Homes & Living Calgary
Trade Magazine of the Year: AG Advance Journal
Vancouver Magazine won the awards for Best Art Direction and Best Photograph (People), while New Trail won for Best Illustration. Best New Writer went to Miranda Martini for her work in Alberta Views.
Brian Kaufman, the founding editor of the Vancouver-based lit-mag subTerrain, was presented with the WMAs lifetime achievement award.
