The National Media Awards Foundation (NMAF) is delighted to announce the nominees for the 49th annual National Magazine Awards. Our diverse roster of volunteer judges dedicated countless hours to evaluating entries from hundreds of magazines across the country. From their careful consideration of almost 800 entries, we are pleased to present this list of nearly 170 impressive finalists.

Gold and silver winners of the 49th Annual National Magazine Awards will be celebrated on Friday, June 5, 2026 at Arcadian Court, Toronto. Doors 6:00 PM. Show 7:00 PM. After-party to follow.

Top Nominees

The Walrus leads the 2026 National Magazine Awards with 25 nominations, reflecting the breadth and depth of the magazine’s editorial and visual excellence across categories. Toronto Life follows with 15 nominations, demonstrating strength across writing, photography, art direction, and design. Maclean’s earned 10 nominations, recognized for its feature writing, profiles, and overall editorial quality. Report on Business magazine rounds out the top four with 8 nominations.

Other strong showings come from Nouveau Projet and Maisonneuve, each with 7 nominations; and Canadian Geographic, Chatelaine, L’actualité, and the Literary Review of Canada, each with 6 nominations.


Individual Nominee Highlights

  • Nicholas Hune-Brown earns three nominations as a writer for The Local — in Long-Form Feature Writing: 6000+, Feature Writing, and Investigative Reporting — making him one of the most-nominated individual writers in this year’s competition.
  • Inori Roy is nominated twice as a primary writer across two publications: in Long-Form Feature Writing 3500–6000 for both The Local (“The Worm Hunters of Southern Ontario“) and The Walrus (“Swarm“).
  • Arno Kopecky‘s “A Son, a Scientist, and the Secret of Bioluminescence” in The Walrus earns two nominations — in both Essays and Personal Journalism.
  • Nicola Hamilton receives four nominations for her art direction at Serviette, recognized in Art Director of the Year, Best Issue, and Best Cover — the latter twice, for “Food is Design” and “Food is Ritual.”
  • Nicolas Langelier earns three nominations: as the writer of “La nouvelle fatigue culturelle” in Nouveau Projet‘s Essays category, and as a nominee for both Editor of the Year and Publisher of the Year.
  • Brian Banks is nominated twice as a writer for Canadian Geographic, in Feature Writing and Short Feature Writing.
