News Producer/Digital Broadcast Journalist

About the Role:

Global News has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Digital Broadcast Journalist / News Producer based out of Winnipeg.

Reporting to the Executive Producer and working closely with the Manager, News and Content, the successful candidate will be responsible for producing and writing duties, primarily our 10 pm newscast, while assisting other shows, but also with the ability to support radio and digital platforms as needed.

This is a Group 4 position under the current collective agreement.

You will contribute by:

  • Writing and producing news, sports, and community events primarily for television, but may also support radio and online when needed.
  • Some reporting may be required.
  • Managing daily content plans and daily broadcast rundowns
  • Assisting the Executive Producer and Manager, News and Content in the coordination of newsroom resources.
  • Ensuring quality control prior to broadcast.
  • Creatively using production graphics and other visual elements to enhance storytelling.
  • Shooting and editing video for broadcast and online as needed, including operating Dejero and other cell or IP based technologies.
  • Making quick decisions when it comes to news judgment and breaking news situations.
  • Keeping current with news and ensuring upcoming news events are noted for future coverage on air or online.
  • Developing and maintaining a network of sources / contacts.
  • Representing our brands at community events.
  • Understanding and adhering to Global News’ Journalistic Principles and Practices.
  • Ability to work on weekdays, evenings, early mornings, and weekends.
  • Performing other duties as required.

Skills and experience you bring:

  • Post-secondary education in broadcast journalism or a related field.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working in a multi-platform newsroom.
  • A positive attitude and a desire to collaborate in a multiplatform newsroom.
  • Ability to manage time effectively to meet strict and often short daily deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Exceptional news writing and storytelling skills.
  • Strong news judgment and editorial skills.
  • Familiarity with non-linear editing systems and digital video formats.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as effectively collaborate in a team setting.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adjust to changing priorities and objectives.
  • Willingness to adapt to rapidly changing technology and workflows.
  • Valid driver’s license and a clear driving record.
