A Perfect Storm
Zoomer magazine
Writer: Carolyn Abraham
Contributor: Kim Honey, handling editor

A Perfect Storm is a prescient investigation, told with great empathy and vivid detail, about a set of intertwined health, legal, familial, and ethical questions that are becoming inescapably relevant for more and more Canadian families. Carolyn Abraham and Zoomer magazine deliver a compelling examination of the minefield of estate battles looming as more Canadians reach their twilight years. Zeroing in on one case, Abraham thoroughly researches the twists and turns of one family, even though thousands of families are in this situation or will soon face what the Palichuk family endured. Well-researched, with strong writing, it’s one of those pieces of journalism that keeps you talking long after the last page.

Sins of a Small-Town Doctor
Toronto Life
Writer: Lauren McKeon
Contributors: Stéphanie Verge, handling editor; Charlotte Genest, fact-checker

Sins of a Small-Town Doctor sheds light on an important, underexplored aspect of the Canadian health-care system and the often-untold costs of doctor shortages, particularly in rural communities: how this lack of options feeds a strong incentive to not question the doctors who are there, and how professional bodies can fail to address serious problems for years. Lauren McKeon and Toronto Life tackled this issue with a deep investigation into one physician’s extreme malpractice and longstanding predatory behaviour—and the lack of oversight at the regulatory college charged with keeping patients safe. McKeon worked hard to gain the trust of sources, a difficult task given the nature of the subject. Excellent reporting—this story was infuriating!

Chasing Waterfalls
re:porter
Illustrator: Tim Zeltner

The whimsical notion of capturing nature’s grandeur on an intimate scale is what appealed to us in this work, while also underscoring why an analogue illustration with a personal, idiosyncratic aesthetic was the best medium to communicate it. This illustration masterfully invites the viewer into the painter’s world with its energetic, whimsical style and dynamic composition. The cascading waterfalls guide the eye toward the painters, evoking the timeless connection between artist and nature.

Art + Money
The Local
Illustrator: Michael DeForge

This body of work is strikingly opinionated, pairing a vibrant, bold style with sharp satire to explore the realities artists face under economic pressure. Through exaggerated signage and expressive characters, the series creates chaotic urban landscapes that reflect both the resilience and vulnerability of working artists. These works capture with sardonic humour and an economic personal style, the plight of most artists. One’s eye is drawn to the graphic economy of rendering but held by the many clever and familiar narratives within.

Photographer: Raphael Ouellet
Contributor: Clare Vander Meersch

Jetsetter is a refined and graphic set of portraits that pushes beyond the expected tropes of business photography. The photographer uses strong lines, shapes, and compositional elements to frame the subject in ways that feel both striking and intentional. What impressed us most was the ability to reveal that ineffable essence that makes a person who they are, while also expanding the storytelling through wonderfully creative composition. It’s bold, elegant, and unforgettable.

Best Magazine: Service & Lifestyle / Meilleur magazine : service et art de vivre

Gold / Médaille d’or

Serviette feeds the foodie community in a way that’s uniquely its own. It takes an avant garde approach to a subject that is too often traditionally presented. It’s refreshing, an absolute pleasure to read, and it is a visual delight.

Best Magazine: Art, Literary, and Culture / Meilleur magazine : art, littérature et culture

Gold / Médaille d’or

A stalwart on the scene, the Literary Review of Canada is one of the few places left to read about and celebrate books in Canada. There is a high bar set by the editorial team with quality reviews of important books appearing in print and online. One could be fooled into thinking the team on this magazine is much larger than it is. This is a magazine of real consequence, proven by its mandate to platform essays of length and intellectual heft in every issue, wrapped in a visual package that is just right, and those covers are *chef’s kiss*. This is the kind of magazine for which the « punching above its weight » aphorism was truly coined. Bravo!
