Ava Chisling is an award-winning writer, editor and media lawyer who counsels creative-types from Academy Award winners to authors, publishers and designers. Based in Montreal, she is a recognized AI/pop culture blogger and creates ad campaigns for many well-known national brands. She has written for enRoute, the National, Time Out, Good.is, Strut and Canadian Lawyer, among many others.

Charles Lim is a creative and technical leader based in Toronto. He has worked at Spafax (now Bookmark) and Totem. He’s currently at Top Hat, an education technology company.

Donna Nebenzahl is a journalist and journalism professor at Concordia University.

Matthew Blackett is the publisher, creative director and one of the founders of Spacing magazine. As publisher, Matthew has helped shape Spacing into one of Canada’s top small magazines: he was named Editor of the Year for 2007 by the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors and Spacing has been named Canadian Small Magazine of the Year six times. Under his leadership, Spacing has been nominated for Magazine of the Year or Magazine Brand of the Year six times at the National Magazine Awards. In 2012, Matthew received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for his dedication to urban issues in Canada.

Joyce Byrne is Group Publisher at RedPoint Media, where she oversees Avenue Calgary and other titles. Joyce has been the president of the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association since 2014, and has also served as president of the NMAF and as a director of Magazines Canada. Before relocating to Canada’s sunniest city she was Vice President at Venture Publishing in Edmonton, but is originally from Toronto, where she began her magazine career at This Magazine, and has served 15 years as Taddle Creek’s proofreader.

Curtis Gillespie has won seven National Magazine Awards, edits Eighteen Bridges magazine, and is director of the Environmental Writing program at the Banff Centre. He lives in Edmonton.

Andrea Bennett is a National Magazine Award-winning writer and editor who currently works at Talonbooks. She is the former Editor-in-Chief of Maisonneuve magazine. Her first book of essays, Like a Boy But Not a Boy, is forthcoming with Arsenal Pulp Press in Fall 2020; she is also the author of two guide books with Moon guides, and a book of poetry with Nightwood Editions. Her nonfiction has been published by The Walrus, The Globe and Mail, The Atlantic, and Reader’s Digest, among others.

Ossie Michelin is an award-winning Inuk journalist and activist from the community of North West River, Labrador and contributes to Canadian Geographic, the CBC radio and online, Briarpatch Magazine, APTN National News, and many other websites and publications. His photography and reporting on the conflict between Indigenous People and resource extraction has garnered international attention. Ossie was recently the Inuit editor of the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada and is currently developing a nationally touring exhibition on Newfoundland and Labrador Residential School Survivors. He reports regularly on stories about Indigenous Issues, the environment, science, and the North with a capital N.

Jean-François Proulx is the creative director of Nouveau Projet and of the design studio Balistique. He has won three National Magazine Awards.

Laura Denton has 20 years of experience in multi-platform and custom content creative, synergizing the vision for national breakthrough campaigns to bring a brand’s story to life. As Creative Director, she led the creative on many award-winning co-branded campaigns and brand launches at Rogers Media for nearly 15 years. She worked closely with editorial with a focus on partnerships at Transcontinental/TVA Media. Laura has worked with some of the most world’s most recognized brands including H&M, Loblaw, L’Oréal Paris, Maybelline New York, Unilever, P&G. Laura is currently Creative Director on the agency side, building brands, developing engaging brand content strategies and custom creative in Vancouver.

Munie de ses deux baccalauréats respectivement en Ès Art et en Études Littéraires à l’UQAM, Hélène Mallette joint les rangs de Vidéotron Le Superclub à titre de rédactrice en chef pour le magazine de la bannière Microplay. Désirant poursuivre son rêve de travailler à son compte, Hélène a fondé sa propre entreprise de création, Limonade Rose, en 2009 : une entreprise se spécialisant en rédaction marketing, en peuplement Web, en gestion de réseaux sociaux, en montage de livres, magazines, menus et documents publicitaires et corporatifs. C’est en 2015 qu’Hélène et son conjoint ont uni leurs forces pour fonder et chapeauter le magazine Dînette. Elle y joue le rôle de rédactrice en chef, de directrice artistique et de designer graphique.

John Montgomery is the art director for Reader’s Digest Canada and Sélection. He’s previously worked on Canadian Business, MoneySense, Toronto Life, Financial Post Magazine and Taddle Creek magazines. John has been nominated for several National Magazine Awards—including a silver win in 2016 for Cover of the Year—and won two Canadian Cover awards in 2012 and 2016.

Chantal Tranchemontagne is the Chief Creative Officer of Big Catch Communications and Editor-In-Chief of Perch magazine, a small, independent magazine based in Eastern Ontario.

Award-winning Art Director Jed Tallo started his career in his hometown of Auckland. Prior to settling in Toronto, Jed worked extensively in London for companies such as Condé Nast International and Hearst Magazines UK. He worked on the successful launch of Walmart Live Better magazine. Most recently he was the Deputy Art Director at Flare magazine, and currently is the Art Director at ELLE Canada.

Anna Minzhulina is an art director and design artist. For more than a decade she art directed and designed the Maisonneuve magazine. During that time, the publication has won the Magazine of the Year award twice. Many artists were nominated as well as rewarded for their work under her direction. Minzhulina herself was nominated multiple times and National Magazine awards for Best Cover, Best Issue, and Best Art Direction.

Dominique Ritter is the editor-in-chief of Reader’s Digest Canada. She has also worked at Bookmark (formerly Spafax), The Canadian Encyclopedia and Adbusters.

Philip Moscovitch is an award-winning Halifax-based writer who works in many different genres, including magazines, radio documentary, and comics. He is currently writing two books–one on Nova Scotia fermented foods and drinks, and another on changing understandings of psychosis and what they mean for those with the condition and their loved ones.

Stéphanie Verge is the executive editor of Reader’s Digest, the co-editor-in-chief of lstw and a National Magazine Award–winning writer. She is also the co-author of The Bar Chef: A Modern Approach to Cocktails.

Penny Caldwell is the former Publisher and VP of Cottage Life Media. She was editor of Cottage Life magazine for 15 years before moving into the Publisher’s office in 2016. Under her leadership, the magazine won hundreds of national and international magazine awards. She has taught in Ryerson University’s Magazine and Web Publishing program and is past president of the International Regional Magazine Association and a former director of Canada’s National Magazine Awards Foundation. In 2017, she was presented with the NMA’s Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement. Recently, Penny left Cottage Life to return to freelance life, pursuing projects that stretch both her creative and her management skills.

Fredrik Carlberg is the founder of Boomerang Art & Design Inc. a 30 year old design agency based in Toronto, Canada. With an aptitude for visual arrangements, design culture, and a heart for refined typography, Fredrik brings a wealth of talent and guidance to online, editorial, print and branding projects. Fredrik directs and employs appropriate talent and skills to each project to create solutions that enhance and add personality to respective brands. Fredrik has instructed at various design schools in Canada and has juried on several international design competitions.

Jocelyne Fournel a consacré la majeure partie de sa carrière à la direction artistique de magazines : notamment Montréal ce mois-ci, MTL et pendant 23 années, L’actualité. Entre 1985 et 1988, elle a été designer graphique à Londres, au Sunday Telegraph Magazine et au World of Interiors. Durant toutes ces années, elle a conçu des milliers de mises en pages et des centaines de pages couvertures, qu’elle a dirigé d’innombrables séances photo et travaillé avec les meilleurs illustrateurs et illustratrices. Elle jongle aujourd’hui avec de nouveaux projets, mais toujours dans l’édition, de la photographie et de l’illustration.

James Hewes was a Publisher and Head of International at BBC Magazines. Part of the team that sold the business to private equity in November 2011, he was then Publishing Director for Top Gear, Good Food, Easy Cook and Lonely Planet Magazine and a Director of BBC Haymarket Exhibitions. He spent four years in Dubai, running Gulf News Publishing. Responsible for more than 30 product areas, he launched the group’s first consumer title in Arabic – wheels Arabic. Appointed President & CEO of FIPP in September 2017, he joined from The Art Newspaper, having been Interim CEO since December 2016.

Raphaël Daudelin est designer graphique et associé du studio Feed avec Anouk Pennel depuis sa fondation en 1999. Aujourd’hui, le studio se concentre principalement dans l’édition et l’identité de marque. Dès leur tout débuts, ils se font remarquer pour la qualité des publications sur lesquelles ils travaillent. En 2005, ils conçoivent L’appareil, un ouvrage hybride dans lequel des chefs de restaurants montréalais sont jumelés à des bédéistes. Le livre est récompensé au Alcuin Awards. L’année suivante, il remporte une médaille de bronze au Stiftung Buchkunst à Leipzig. En plus de leur travail au studio, ils enseignent à l’UQAM et sont régulièrement invités sur des jurys et comme conférenciers. En 2013, ils participent au dixième anniversaire du concours The beauty of books (Shanghai). En 2015, Raphaël enseigne à l’Université Jian Qiao (Shanghai). Cette même année, ils sont également invités au International Design Forum (Nagoya) En 2017, ils participent à la première édition du festival Fig. (Liège). As editorial director at Sid Lee, Jean-François Légaré manages the content creation team and works on projects for brands including Air Transat, National Bank and Hyundai. Jean-François landed at the Montreal-based agency after 15 years in media, where he made his mark as a travel and lifestyle reporter and editor. On top of working for some of Canada’s top consumer magazines, he commissioned and edited content for brands such as Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Bell, Investors Group and ALDO. During his tenure as editor-in-chief of Air Canada’s renowned travel magazine, enRoute was named the world’s best inflight publication by Monocle and the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors named him Editor of the Year in 2018.

Richard A. Johnson is a writer, editor and facilitator based in Victoria, B.C., whose work has been featured in The New Quarterly, The Walrus, This Magazine, Reader’s Digest and elsewhere. Judging for the NMAs is wonderful because it’s like being gifted a secret box of great storytelling!

Lianne George is the founder and Creative Director of the newly launched content studio and editorial consultancy, George&Co., created to help brands build stronger connections with women through storytelling that matters. Lianne has over 15 years of experience leading some of the country’s most iconic media brands. Before launching George&Co., Lianne was the Director of Lifestyle Content for Rogers Publishing and Editor-in-Chief of Chatelaine, where she led a highly successful brand and digital transformation, re-establishing Chatelaine as Canada’s #1 women’s media brand. In 2018, she won the National Magazine Awards Grand Prix Editor of the Year for her work at Chatelaine. Previously, she was founding editor of The Grid, Torstar’s locally beloved and internationally acclaimed city weekly, and held senior-level positions at Maclean’s, Canadian Business and ELLE Canada. She is co-author of The Ego Boom: Why the World Really Does Revolve Around You.

Fidel Peña is a creative director and co-founder of Underline Studio. His projects at Underline have included identity and branding for the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Universities Canada and Harvard Medical School and campaigns and publications for Google, UNHCR The UN Refugee Agency, and the National Gallery of Canada. Fidel’s work has received numerous accolades from across Canada, the US and Europe, and he has lectured on design topics in Spain, Mexico and Canada. He was born in El Salvador, is the former president of the Advertising and Design Club of Canada and is currently a board member of Prefix ICA.

Diplômé en science politique, il a auparavant été chef d’information numérique au Journal de Montréal et Journal de Québec de 2014 à 2017 et rédacteur en chef du Magazine Jobboom, de 2006 à 2014. Il est journaliste professionnel depuis 24 ans.

Marie Lambert-Chan est rédactrice en chef du magazine Québec Science depuis 2016. Elle travaille depuis plus de douze ans dans la presse écrite. Elle a signé des articles sur la science, la santé, l’éducation, l’économie et les tendances sociales pour La Presse, Le Devoir, Québec Science, ELLE Québec, Affaires universitaires, entre autres.

Anicka Quin is the Editorial Director of Western Living and Vancouver magazines. Under her leadership, Western Living has become a regional brand with a national reputation, winning Best Home Design and Décor magazine in Canada in 2017 at the Canadian Magazine Awards; Vancouver magazine has also thrived under her tenure, winning Magazine of the Year at the Canadian Editors’ Choice Awards in 2017. Before joining Western Living and Vanmag, Anicka worked with Alternatives Journal and the alt-weekly id Magazine. She sits on the board of directors of the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors and works with Magazines Canada for their professional development series.

Informed by her rich and varied 25 years as a journalist and audience specialist, Sandra Martin currently heads family communications and content strategy for WE. During her tenure as Editor-in-Chief of Canadian Living, the magazine won numerous accolades, including Gold in the Best Media Web site category at the 2015 Canadian Online Publishing Awards, and maintained its place as the most-read paid women’s lifestyle publication in print and online. Previously, Sandra helmed the highly successful launch of Walmart Live Better/Vivre mieux Walmart, and served in senior editorial capacities at Today’s Parent. Her byline has appeared in the Globe and Mail, Cottage Life and MoneySense, among others.

DB Scott (David) is president of Impresa Communications Limited of Cambridge, Ont., consultants to the magazine industry and the not-for-profit sector. He is the academic coordinator for magazine and web publishing at Ryerson University’s Chang School of Continuing Education. For 13 years he has published Canadian Magazines, a daily blog about the industry (www.canadianmags.blogspot.com ). He has been a frequent moderator and presenter at the MagNet industry conference, at Magazines Canada’s Business Media Summit, a frequent awards judge for the national and western awards as well as the International Regional Magazines Association (IRMA). He was president of the National Magazine Awards Foundation in 1991 and was presented with the Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement — the industry’s highest individual honour — in 2010.

Ariel Brewster has been a senior editor at Today’s Parent for the past seven years. Before that she worked on staff at The Grid, Toronto Life, and The Walrus, and as a fact-checker at New York magazine. She has two young sons.

Jenny Ferguson is Métis, an activist, a feminist, an auntie, and an accomplice with a PhD. She believes writing and teaching are political acts. She is the creative-nonfiction editor and à la carte blog editor for carte blanche, where she welcomes pitches for blog posts from BIPOC, QT2S, and disabled writers, as well as writers from other marginalized communities. Border Markers, her collection of linked flash-fiction narratives, is available from NeWest Press. She lives on Osage territory and teaches at Missouri Southern State University. She also teaches at the University of British Columbia through their Optional Residency MFA program.

David Hayes is an award winning journalist and author. His articles and essays have appeared in publications such as Toronto Life, Reader’s Digest, The Walrus, The Globe and Mail and The New York Times Magazine. He teaches Advanced Feature Writing at Ryerson University and is on the faculty of the University of King’s College’s MFA in Creative Nonfiction. These days he spends much of his time ghostwriting books.

Pascal Raiche-Nogue est un journaliste basé à Moncton, au Nouveau-Brunswick. Julian Brave NoiseCat is a correspondent at Real America with Jorge Ramos, contributing editor for Canadian Geographic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in The Guardian, The Nation, The Paris Review and many other publications. He was a finalist for a National Magazine Award, Best New Magazine Writer in 2018. A proud member of the Canim Lake Band Tsq’escen and descendant of the Lil’Wat Nation of Mount Currie, he resides in Washington, D.C.

Ralph Elawani est écrivain et journaliste indépendant. Il est l’auteur d’une biographie du romancier et cinéaste Emmanuel Cocke, C’est complet au royaume des morts, et de l’essai sur la contre-culture Les marges détachables. Il a collaboré à plusieurs ouvrages collectifs, dont Bleu nuit, Satanic Panic, L’ère-seconde et Yuletide Terror. Son essai « Les identités victimaires », paru dans Nouveau projet, lui a valu le Grand prix du journalisme indépendant 2017 dans la catégorie opinion/analyse. Sara Harowitz runs content for Vitruvi, namely as the editor of its online journal Basenotes. She is the former editor of both MONTECRISTO Magazine and SAD Magazine, and has also written for publications including The Globe and Mail, Hazlitt, and HuffPost Canada. Her Maisonneuve piece, “Kings, Queens and Everything In-Between” received Honourable Mention from the 2016 Awards in the Society category.

Jean-Baptiste Hervé est un journaliste indépendant vivant et travaillant à Montréal. Il a étudié le littérature et le cinéma puis s’est dirigé le plus naturellement du monde vers le monde radiophonique. Il a animé pendant dix ans Cabaret Diaspora, une émission consacrée aux musique urbaines africaines et aux origines du chant afro-américain. Son travail est fortement influencé par le field recording, les chanteurs de blues, la rumba congolaise et les écrivains voyageurs. Il s’intéresse aux notions de transculturel, les rapports de co-habitation, les cultural studies, le vivre ensemble, l’oralité, la nordicité, le post-colonialisme. Journaliste pigiste dans plusieurs médias populaires, il se spécialise surtout en musique et en cinéma documentaire.

Stéphane Lauer est éditorialiste et chroniqueur au Monde après quatre années passées à New York comme correspondant. Diplômé du Centre d’Enseignement du Journalisme de Strasbourg (CUEJ) et de l’Institut des Études Politiques de Toulouse, il a participé à la création de la radio BFM avant d’entrer au Monde en 1994. Journaliste au service économie du journal, il prend la tête de ce service en 2008 avant de devenir éditorialiste en 2011.

David Michon is the former editor of Icon magazine, and former managing editor of Monocle magazine and Winkreative creative agency. As an independent strategist and editor, he currently consults on a variety of creative projects, which include a number of magazines and books. He continues to write for publications such as Monocle, L’Uomo Vogue, Vogue Italia, Kinfolk, PIN-UP and others.

Nathalie Collard est journaliste au quotidien La Presse depuis 2001. Auparavant, elle a collaboré à plusieurs magazines québécois. Stephen Trumper has been an instructor at Ryerson University’s School of Journalism since Fall 1995. He has been a top editor at Toronto Life, Harrowsmith and Financial Post Business. He is currently on the board of the Canadian Abilities Foundation, which publishes Abilities magazine, for which he writes the back-page column. In June 2012 Stephen was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for public service. In June 2013 he was honoured with the Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement from the National Magazine Awards Foundation.

She won a National Magazine Awards in 2017, and was chosen by Tanya Talaga to receive the RBC Taylor Emerging Writer Prize in 2018. Her short story “Unearth” has been selected by Roxane Gay to appear in Best American Short Stories 2018. A Mind Spread Out On The Ground, her debut book of essays, is forthcoming from Doubleday Canada in March 2019.

Jim Gifford is Editorial Director, Non-Fiction, at HarperCollins Canada in Toronto. He has been publishing bestselling and award-winning books since 1998, with a focus on narrative non-fiction, especially memoir. Robyn Doolittle is an award-winning journalist and author. She is a member of the Globe and Mail’s investigative team and is a two-time winner of Canada’s Michener Award. Recently, Robyn’s probe into the ways that Canadian police services handle sexual assault cases has prompted a national overhaul of policy, training and practices around sexual violence.​ For that work, she was awarded a National Newspaper Award for investigative journalism and was named the 2017 journalist of the year.​

Jude Isabella is an award-winning science journalist, concentrating on the environment, ecology, and archaeology with occasional forays into health. As a journalist she has worked for newspapers and magazines, on staff or as a freelancer. She spent a dozen years as managing editor of YES Mag, Canada’s science magazine for kids. In 2015, she launched Hakai Magazine, an online publication focused on coastal science and societies. Jude continues to write for young readers. Her sixth book for kids, about the wolves of Yellowstone National Park for Kids Can Press, is slated for publication in 2019.

Kim Pittaway is an award-winning journalist and educator. She is the executive director of the MFA in Creative Nonfiction program at the University of King’s College in Halifax, a winner of the NMA Outstanding Achievement Award and the former editor-in-chief of Chatelaine magazine.

Jess Taylor is a Toronto writer and poet. Her second collection, Just Pervs, will be released by Book*hug in Canada in Fall 2019. Recently, a short story from that collection, “Two Sex Addicts Fall in Love”, was long-listed for The Journey Prize and included in The Journey Prize Anthology 30. The title story from her first collection, Pauls (BookThug, 2015), “Paul,” received the 2013 Gold Fiction National Magazine Award. Jess believes that collaboration and helping other writers is an important part of her writing practice and continues to organize events in the community. She is currently working on a novel, Play, and a continuation of her life poem, Never Stop.

Eduardo C. Corral is the author of Slow Lightning, which won the 2011 Yale Series of Younger Poets competition. His second book, Guillotine, will be published by Graywolf Press in 2020. He’s the recipient of Whiting Writers’ Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the Holmes National Poetry Prize and the Hodder Fellowship, both from Princeton University. He teaches in the MFA program at North Carolina State University.

Kalli Anderson is an award-winning freelance writer, audio producer and filmmaker based in Toronto. She is an assistant professor at the Ryerson School of Journalism.

Jeremy Keehn is a features editor at Bloomberg Businessweek. He was previously a news and business editor for NewYorker.com, digital director of Harper’s, and senior editor at The Walrus.

Brian Morgan is a designer and art director based in Montreal, and is currently the art director of Maisonneuve. He’s worked as the art director of The Walrus, the deputy art director of Maclean’s, and was the secretary of the National Magazine Awards until 2015.
