The National Media Awards Foundation (NMAF) is delighted to share the nominees for the 45th annual National Magazine Awards. Our incredible roster of more than 100 volunteer judges dedicated countless hours to evaluating entries from hundreds of magazines across the country. From their careful consideration of more than 1000 entries, we are pleased to present this list of 199 impressive finalists.
The winners will be announced on June 3 during a virtual ceremony hosted by award-winning journalist Kelly Boutsalis, with Gold winners in writing and visual categories receiving a $1000 cash prize. Please join us in congratulating all of this year’s nominees!

Individual Nominee Highlights
- Michael Friscolanti’s “Every 49 Minutes,” published in Maclean’s, has two nominations — Investigative Reporting and Long-Form Feature Writing 6000+.
- “Citizen of Nowhere,” written by Adnan Khan for The Walrus, is nominated twice, in Long-Form Feature Writing and Profiles.
- “Doctor Fentanyl,” written by Brett Popplewell for Toronto Life, is nominated twice, in Long-Form Feature Writing and Investigative Reporting.
- The Walrus’s “Justice on Trial,” is nominated twice — for Eva Holland in Long-Form Feature Writing and Lauren Crazybull in Illustration.
- “Kids in Crisis,” published by Broadview, has received nominations for Miranda Newman in Feature Writing and Cornelia Li in Illustration.
- Hazlitt’s “Molar City” is nominated in Personal Journalism for Tom Thor Buchanan and Illustration for Hudson Christie.
- Stephanie Bai’s “Seeking Sanctuary,” published in Maisonneuve, has earned nominations for Long-Form Feature Writing and Best Emerging Writer.
- Sabrina Myre is nominated in Feature Writing for “Les femmes au front pour traquer les pédophiles sur Internet” and Short Feature Writing for “Des femmes chassent le plastique pour sauver la planète,” both published in ELLE Québec.
- For “What Happened at Northwood?,” published in The Coast, Stephanie Nolen is nominated in both Long-Form Feature Writing 6000+ and Investigative Reporting.
- Christina Frangou is nominated in Long-Form Feature Writing for “No Way Out,” published in Chatelaine, and Investigative Reporting for “The race for answers,” published in Maclean’s.
- Hugo Meunier is nominated in Profiles for “Un parcours trans, une carrière dans noir silence” and Feature Writing for “Une soirée avec l’unité d’urgence sociale de la DPJ,” both published in URBANIA.
Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement
After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to once again postpone awarding the Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement. All applications for these awards from 2020 and 2021 will be kept on file for consideration, and we look forward to celebrating the winners at next year’s awards.

About the 45th NMAs Winners’ Celebration
The 2022 awards presentation will take place on June 3 and will be hosted by Kelly Boutsalis. Kelly is an award-winning Mohawk freelance journalist from Six Nations of the Grand River, currently living in Scarborough, Ontario.

Due to the ever-changing situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s awards presentation will once again be held as a virtual, live streamed event.
We encourage all nominees to tune in to the awards show virtually on June 3, 2022, and we’d love to see your live reaction to winning a Gold award! Please contact the Foundation with the subject line “NMA Zoom Acceptance Speech” at staff@magazine-awards.com to obtain an access code if you would like to present a winner’s speech live on Zoom during the awards show.Â
If you would like to send in a pre-recorded winner’s speech, please email us a video clip (maximum 2 minutes in length) with the subject line “NMA Pre-Recorded Speech.” There will also be an option to call in via telephone to give a winner’s speech; dial-in information will be displayed on-screen during the ceremony.
