Celebrating Canadian Creators
The National Magazine Awards Foundation (NMAF) is honoured to announce the nominees for the 39th annual National Magazine Awards.
This year, 184 Canadian magazines from coast to coast to coast—English and French, print and digital—entered the best of their editorial and design to the National Magazine Awards, submitting the work of more than 3000 writers, editors, photographers, illustrators, art directors and other creators. The NMAF’s 232 volunteer judges have nominated a total of 309 submissions from 84 different Canadian magazines for awards in 39 written, visual, integrated and special categories. A record 12 magazines have been nominated for the first time.
Gold, Silver and Honourable Mention awards will be announced at the Arcadian Court in Toronto on June 10, at the 39th annual National Magazine Awards gala, hosted by author Chris Turner and presented by CDS Global More than $50,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to Canadian creators. Tickets are on sale now.
MAGAZINE OF THE YEAR
The four finalists for Magazine of the Year, given to the magazine that most consistently engages, surprises and serves the needs of its readers, are Canadian Geographic, Caribou, Maisonneuve and Nouveau Projet.
BEST MAGAZINE BRAND
For the award for Best Magazine Brand—presented to the publication whose brand best delivers on their editorial mandate through at least three platforms—the three finalists are Cottage Life, Ricardo and Spacing.
Toronto Life leads all magazines with 26 nominations, followed by The Walrus (20 nominations), Maclean’s and Maisonneuve (18 each), L’actualité and Sportsnet (16), and Hazlitt (15). See below for an expanded table of nominated magazines.
Magazines nominated for their first National Magazine Awards include 1968 Magazine, Buzzfeed Canada, Caribou, Chloe, DTK Men, Hakai, Humber Literary Review, One Throne, Oxygène, Reel West, The Rusty Toque, and SAD Magazine.
For Best New Magazine Writer, the four finalists are Desmond Cole, Karen Ho, Richard Kelly Kemick and Kat Shermack.
For Best New Magazine Photographer, the four finalists are Ted Belton, Hannah Eden, Marta Iwanek and Luis Mora.

FOUNDATION AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT
Announced on April 28, the winner of the Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement is Kim Pittaway, whose career contributions to Canadian magazine editing, writing, teaching and mentorship have made a critical and lasting impact on the industry. The NMAF will present Kim Pittaway with this prestigious award at the 39th annual NMA gala on June 10.
